3 Image Gouache Montage

This project is about working with gouache and the techniques you have just been introduced to. Pick three non-related images and assemble into a single unified composition. You can use acquired images or shoot pics yourself. Size of original 10 x 12.5, Size out final output (inkjet) 8 x 10. 80% of the original. We will be working with an approval process to start with, so have a Marker Comp (4 x 5) ready to be approved on Friday, October 29. Have all your work items with you on Monday so you can make revisions or move into production.

Final Illustration is due on Friday, November 5. Scan, Blog, Save .pdf and Printed/Mounted (1 inch border on Black foamcore).

Post mid-term project - Product illustration

So, although the Red Barn pamphlet project was a significant project for you to try to execute at an approveable level... This new project is our first post-midterm assignment. What is needed by your "client" is a tightly rendered illustration of their product (you pick the product or... name your own poison). No painted backgrounds, just the really well executed image of the product. This illustration would be used in ads, or as a drop in image in a brochure or on a website. The background should be white to allow for a COB/BDO (cut out background or background drop out). The technique/style you use is also up to you. It just has to be a tight representation of the product. Simple. Make it look good.

Due on Friday, October 29 at the beginning of class, printed to 8.5 x 11 glossy/luster inkjet (COB to drop out background texture), mounted on black foamcore with 1 inch border, scanned, blogged and a pdf ready to turn in to me. We will work in class on Monday.

Go back on the blog to see earlier class work examples. This level of work is what I'm expecting from all of you. Be the first class of all of you doing this well. Make that product look sexy.

Catching up on my posting info.

Friday is a work day on the Gouache pick-out exercise. Bring your supplies and boards to work on in class.

Monday is the final illustrations for the Red Barn festival. Have them completed, scanned, blogged and in pdf format to turn in to me. We shall see how they turned out.

When is the Gouache pick-out exercise due? OK... next Weds, but be ready, I'll have you probably do one more before I assign the 3 image gouache montage. You can do more of any of these techniques so you get better, don't just wait for assignments. It is a simple concept... the more you do the better you get. Also, have your midterm grade selections posted on your blog by Weds. Write me some brilliant copy about your selections.

Client Color Comp

Red Barn, full-blown, tightly rendered color comp is due on Monday. Have everything resolved in the comp for the client to approve... compostition, color, technique and style. Can't move forward until you get them to sign off. Make it good.

Friday thangs

So, OK, for Friday...

Two more 8 x 10ish wash-line/line-wash watercolors (topic is your choice) once again. There is some improvement going on with what I am seeing, but you have to do them with the intent to accomplish something that looks good.  Keep working to find that technique you can pull off consistently, then push it.  We are also looking at proportional sketches for the Ryle Mural project. So if you didn't do your sketches today proportionally, then this is the time to do it. Rework and refine for this next stage. Or start over if you think your initial idea sucks. The final comp will be 24 in x 3.75 inch when we go to a full color comp.

What are we doing or I have a plan.

For Wednesday... we are looking at 2 more 8 x 10ish watercolors, topic and technique your choice. Make them look good. Also looking at color comps of the two Red Barn illustrations. Keep in mind the formats you have to work with. This would be an approval point for you as an designer/illustrator. Can't move forward until approved. Make these good too. And... looking at the initial compositional/content sketches for the Ryle Hall murall project to see what you are thinking - composition, content and stylistic.
