I need an illustration for a poster to promote a competiton about Abraham Lincoln and his life and contributions to this country. Truman State University's Library Special Collections sponsors this competition for student artisits, researchers and writers. The competition is open to K-12 students and college undergraduates. Awards and prizes are given to the best submissions each year. This has been going on since 1977. So the topic for your artwork is... Honest Abe. Start thinking of what you could visually illustrate using this topic and how it would be used in an overall poster design.
Here are the specs to work with...
Size: 13 x 19 inch w/bleed, final print size of poster - 4-color
Process: I want to see a 4 x 6 inch color marker or digital comprehesive layout to look at on Friday, September 30th. The color comp is a tight small color version of what you plan to paint, where you have worked out all concept, subject matter, compositional and color decisions. Comps are used to show to an art director, art buyer or client what you propose to do to get an approval to produce the final artwork. The final gouache illustration is due on October 5th to turn in to me. Final 13 x 19 inkjet print is due (mounted, 1 inch border on black) on Friday, October 7th. I will play the role of the art director/client and will either approve or reject your color marker comp. If I don't approve your comp you get to recomp until I do. So, think this through and come up with a solid idea/concept that you can illustrate. The stronger the concept, the easier it will be to illustrate. Concept is king.
You are only producing the illustration, you are not designing the actual poster. That will be the designers job, you are the illustrator. Got it?
