Back up and running

Well, I can tell registration is in full swing. I haven't blogged lately. I have the mid-term portfolios graded, so remind me to hand out the sheets tomorrow in class. The grades you'll see do not take into consideration any absences that I am tracking. I have them plugged in my software but not tracking yet to the grade. Remember anything above three absenses is 1/3 letter grade off the final grade. The weight of the midterm grade is 25%. The final portfolio is 65% and the blog is 10% of your final grade. So you all need to begin kicking up the quality your output on these remaining assignments that utilize the techniques we worked on in the first half of the semester. Consistancy is important.

Midterm portfolio

You need to assemble the following and post to your blog in a post titled Midterm Portfolio.

Your best examples of:

• 3 Traditional line art illustrations
• 2 Watercolor illustrations
• 3 Traditional line and color illustrations
• 1 Gouache illustration
• 1 Digital line art illustration
• 1 Digtial line/color illustration
• 1 YOUR CHOICE

Also, I would like to read your thoughts about what and why you are choosing these pieces for your portfolio. Some self reflection would be good. This is due on October 19th.

Blog

Don't forget to create a blog so you can begin posting your work and thoughts of what you are doing in class. You can use blogger, wordpress or, what's the other one...? This blog has grade weight in your mid-term and final portfolio grades. Give it serious attention. Don't forget to send me a link to your blog so I can add it to the list on the Illustration blog. This blog is a digital journal of what you have accomplished and what you think you have learned or even therapy for the difficulties you have faced during the course of the semester. Write something worth reading.

Final Portfolio Specs

OK, here is what I need from you for your final portfolio. This is due on our final.

I have counted up the "projects" we have worked on and here is the list of what we have accomplished.

1. Facebook Profile illustration
2. Group/Event Poster illustration
3. Red Barn pamphlet illustrations (cover and inside)
4. Product illustration
5. 3-image Gouache montage illustration
6. CD Cover art illustration
7. Book Cover illustration and dust cover design
8. Cheesy Airbrush

We also had a number of line, line/wash and watercolor exercises. To recap the techniques we have worked with... line, line/wash, watercolor, some small amount of digital painting, gouache and airbrush. We also worked in developing approval comps. Have I missed anything?

For your final portfolio. This consists of your blog, a high-resolution (300 ppi), multiple-page pdf (to turn in to my public folder) and a final printout of your best illustration from this semester (mount of black foamcore with 1" border)

Selection consideration specs: I want to see your best four formal projects from the list of eight. Also I want to see 10 of your best technique exercises and your best marker comp. What I'm looking for in the submissions to your portfolio is an understanding of technique (whatever technique it is), confidence, composition, color, line quality and in the case of the project selections the content/concept. Basically, is it a kick-butt illustration? If it is, put it in your portfolio.

You still have one full week if you want to rework projects and to do additional technique exercises to use in to your final portfolio. Show me what you got.
