Project #1: Line and Space
Purpose
To create 2 designs based on a shoe that you are wearing. The first will be created through contour drawing; the second will be created physically, using wire to construct a three-dimensional line based form.
Objectives
• To heighten visual and spatial awareness
• To compare, contrast, and connect linear notation in two and three dimensions
• To explore the transformation of an everyday object into a piece of art
• To learn basic construction skills.
Process
Make a life sized (or as close to as possible) contour drawing of a shoe in your sketchbook with pencil line only: do not use shading. Make as many drawings as are necessary to complete at least 3 finished drawings that represent the contours and intersections most eloquently from different views.
Using wire, make a wire portrait of the shoe (larger than actual size). Record as much detail and change in contour as you can. Like the pencil drawings, this is a linear representation only. Do not fill in or wrap the wire to make solid areas or solid planes. Avoid heavy and visually distracting points of connection. Experiment technically before working on your final version. For best results use a simple bend/align/bind wire technique. Practice the joints a few times before working on the final version.
Tips
This exercise requires careful observation, recording, and building. The shoe will be transformed into two types of linear information. Details are important. You must develop the form based on what you actually see, not on what you think you know.
