A Cubic Foot of Space
Purpose
You will create a 12"x12"x12" cube and design the interior to be visually interesting. Address every area of the space. In 2D design we designed the picture plane, filling in the space, using Gestalt principles to create illusions within a square. For this assignment you need to design the 3D space, using the elements from a common board game. What will the shapes do in the space? Transform, overlap, melt, tear, what is gravity’s effect, is there movement, what direction is the shape going? Using the principle of grouping, closure and proximity, each tiny point will be placed intentionally to create these larger shapes/volumes.
Objectives
• To explore external and interior design.
• To consider construction methods, and materials..
• To create a dramatically new form with limited predefined materials.
Process
Make 10 sketches (concepts) including scale and plan drawings from all external views in your sketchbook. Be sure to create a strong overall form rather than focusing only on decorative aspects. After all 10 sketches are completed make 10 sketches (concepts) including scale and plan drawings from all internal views in your sketchbook. Again, be sure to create a strong overall form rather than focusing only on decorative aspects. Using your exterior and interior sketches as a blueprint, build your final 12"x12"x12" composition. Addition materials may be used upon approval of instructor.
Tips
You may have any number of window openings, of any size or shape, at any location. You could eliminate one wall altogether, creating a stage. You could eliminate any two walls. You can cut out square or circle windows. You can make multiple windows on multiple walls, or a simple window on one wall. How you control the view of the interior space will depend on your concept and how you want the audience to view the interior space. Remember light has a big influence on perception; will a lot of light be let in? A little?
The elements of evaluation for this particular project are:
1.) Time Management and Professionalism: meeting all deadlines and being prepared to work in class.
2.) Process and Research: building upon initial ideas in a manner that shows progression of ideas.
3.) Presentation and Craft: is the quality of the production and workmanship of the project superior in quality?
4.) Design and Layout: the conceptual, formal and overall effectiveness of the project.
