Personal Transformation
Purpose
Make a 3D piece of art that is wearable. The designers must be able to wear the piece themselves, during the period of critique. The wearable must transform the person from a body, into something else. The wearable must be based off of research of other wearable types of things.
Process
Start collecting. You should have been doing this all semester but if you haven't, START NOW. Your wearable can be made from just about any material. All of your decisions for construction, materials and design should be unified to your theme. You might begin by surveying the functions in your own clothing. What is a snap, a button, a zipper an eyelet…Recognize existing relationships (functions) and use them.
Your theme is up to you, it should be related to something that you are interested in or passionate about. This wearable should change the appearance of the wearer. Therefore, it is not about making a piece of clothing out of something irregular. But making something transform the wearer into something new.
Performance
For the final critique, you will show the class your personal transformation via the wearable and a performance. Since this will be a new experience, the performance will be extra credit based. The minimum requirement for the project will be to display your wearable to the class for critique by standing in place, this will be the minimum and no extra credit will be given. The extra credit will be based on how well your performance helps convey the symbolism behind your transformation. Have fun with this and take this opportunity to add further meaning to your work!
